Mazzie Scores Gamewinner for Huskies Lacrosse

SHIPPENSBURG--Tia Mazzie's (Barto/Boyertown) goal with 2:04 left to play lifted the Bloomsburg University lacrosse team to a 16-15 win over Shippensburg University on Monday afternoon.

With the score tied 15-15, Mazzie was awarded a free position shot which she put past Lady Raider goalie Meghan Kearney with 2:04 remaining. Bloomsburg had just tied the score 14 seconds earlier when Samantha King (Elkton, MD/Northeast) scored with 2:18 to go in the game. Shippensburg did have a chance to get even in the game with 1:39 to play when Rachael Murray was awarded a free position shot, but, Bloomsburg goalie Allison Ziants (Winfield/Selinsgrove) made the save.

Bloomsburg trailed at halftime by a score of 9-6, but scored six of the first eight goals of the second period, including three by Allie Kakareka (Royersford/Spring-Ford), to go in front 12-11, its first lead since early in the game. Shippensburg rallied and eventually took a 15-14 lead with 5:06 to go setting up the late game heroics for the Huskies.

King led the Huskies with four goals, while Mazzie, Kakareka and Kim Springman (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) all scored three each, while Ziants made five saves in goal. Shippensburg got seven goals from Murray in the loss.

Bloomsburg goes to 4-1, 2-1 in the PSAC East, and will play at home with Kutztown on Thursday at 4 p.m.
